Your cell. The corpse in front of you holds the Dungeon Cell Key , which opens the cell door leading to the greater Asylum. The long hallway has some disinterested Hollows which you could kill for some souls.
The water here impedes movement. Not a big deal, but keep that in mind for later. The cowering Hollow will not attack. This ladder leads from the dungeon to the main floor of the asylum. A short walk into the courtyard brings you to the first Bonfire in the game. Activate it if you wish; you can return here after some more exploration. This door opens from the hallway side as opposed to the courtyard side. You can open it later in the level if you so desire. Several tall jars line the courtyard here, none of which contain anything.
This is the first time you will see the Asylum Demon. It is easiest to run from it by escaping through the gate that opens to your character's left towards the middle of the wall. If you can defeat the demon with your broken sword, then good for you! You are a better gamer than most, and you will walk away with both the Big Pilgrim's Key and the Demon's Great Hammer - but there is an easier way to obtain the latter from Snuggly the Crow. If you choose Black Firebomb as a starting gift , you can kill the demon quite easily using it.
The gate here will close behind you after you cross the threshold. Follow the corridor to the bend. Be wary of the Hollow shooting at you with a bow and arrows while you run to your class shield. Grab it and duck into the small antechamber to your left so you can equip it. The Archer will have run away by now, leaving you time to pick up your class weapon.
Be aware that the undead archer will have taken a position at the top of the stairs around the bend. The second floor of the Asylum.
You'll eventually get to where you found the dying Oscar, Knight of Astora earlier. Since his death he's gone a bit crazy and will promptly attack you as you get near, so fight him carefully, timing your swings in between blocking. He's relatively easy to defeat, so you shouldn't have any problems. Once he's dead, head up the stairs. Beware - the boulder from earlier may make a return appearance. At the top is a Hollow. Kill it and head through the gate, turn to the left and kill the three other Hollows.
With them dead, go through the doorway straight ahead. Inside here are two Hollow Soldiers , so put them down as well. With them gone, use the Undead Asylum F2 West Key you found earlier to open the door told you it'd come in handy. Head through the doorway to find a corpse with the item Rusted Iron Ring on it.
This item is invaluable for fighting the boss Hydra in Darkroot Basin, as when it is equipped, the Rusted Iron Ring makes sure you don't lose mobility even when in water.
It's also immensely useful in the swamps of Blighttown. Once you've got your ring, return to the courtyard and prepare for the boss fight with the Stray Demon.
You don't have to fight him - but let's face it, you're gonna, right? Since the Stray Demon is under the floor the area in the picture above collapses when you stand on it you'll take significant damage falling through the floor before you even get to the fight.
Before you head down, equip armor and a shield that are resistant to magic, like the Crest Shield you got from Oscar, since the Stray Demon uses a magic attack that can do a lot of damage. When you're ready, hit that floor and be ready to retreat as soon as you land.
When you hit the ground, hit lock-on immediately and try to get behind the Demon. If you're quick enough you'll avoid his first attack, which is likely to be his powerful magic spell where he shoots a large buffeting force in front of him. While he's recovering from the attack down an Estus to heal yourself and keep circling to stay behind him.
Observe his attack patterns before you begin your assault. His Magic Explosion move is heralded by the Demon rocking back slightly, flexing his backside muscles, so beat a quick retreat further back when he does that and when the attack fades, leap in and wail on his backside with your weapon. For maximum damage, use a two-hander.
His other attack to watch out for is his - for lack of a better phrase - Butt Stomp. At certain points he'll try to crush you by flying upwards and then down on your head, so avoid this by retreating away and then running back in behind him as soon as he lands. If you take your time, don't get cocky and use a similar strategy to how you fought the Asylum Demon the Stray Demon shouldn't be too much trouble.
The other method for defeating this boss is by going in stark naked, take off all your armor and just use weapon in a 2-handed fashion. Now as soon as you drop in sprint to the one of the corners closest to you, if you do this fast enough you will not aggro the boss. Use a Estus and wait for the boss to turn around and sprint to his rear, from this position the only attacks he will use is Butt Stomp and Flame Explosion, both of which are easily avoidable.
Simply circle around him keeping to his rear, avoid attacks and then go in for a few hit. Rinse and repeat. You should now head up the ladder, out of the Undead Asylum and return to Firelink Shrine. Wave bye-bye to the Asylum for good.
